Normalcy. We are all trying to get there but many things have occurred and continue to stretch us and really, what is normalcy?
Over the past three years, our work required creativity, agility, and an enormous scope of humility so we could be the best motivators for our respective teams. Despite very trying days, we know our teams lean on and expect us to provide the direction and assurance—as they should. It’s an important duty as a leader. When it feels hard to be thankful, push, we absolutely have lots to be thankful for, including our family, friends and colleagues. Let out that sigh and step into the crack, even if it is tiring. We have faced challenges head on, repeatedly.
The one thing that is normal, despite the turmoil of recent days, is that the fact we can lean on each other to provide valuable advice and, if nothing else, just for a bit of encouragement. We can count on each other to remind us that hard days always yield valuable lessons and opportunities for the future. In our profession, change is constant and we are built for it. Hold tight to your strength and your relationships, normalcy hasn’t left us.
Dr. Lesley Clack, Associate Professor and Department Chair of Health Sciences at FGCU, ACHE WFC Board Member
Dr. Lesley Clack is an Associate Professor and Department Chair of Health Sciences at Florida Gulf Coast University and is an ACHE WFC Board Member. Throughout her academic career, she has focused on the development and direction of health administration programs and teaching and mentoring students to obtain management and leadership positions in healthcare systems – a core pillar of ACHE.
One of the ways Dr. Clack has been able to engage with students in healthcare management and leadership is through studying abroad! Dr. Clack recently launched the Comparative Healthcare Systems in Europe study abroad program at FGCU, where she and 17 students saw first-hand what other healthcare systems were like in Switzerland and Italy.
Through valuable experiences like these, Dr. Clack can offer mentorship, guidance, and insight into the complex world of healthcare beyond our backyard. Mentorship and learning opportunities like these are crucial elements to cultivating the next generation of healthcare leaders, which Dr. Clack embraces with both FGCU and ACHE Western Florida Chapter. Like most of you, I make time to mentor. It is often hard to squeeze in. The calendar is ugly, the projects many. However, each and every time, whether it is a long-term relationship or a one-off request for a career huddle, I am always enriched by the time I spend with each person. Is it easy to make time, no, but the reward is great. Watching junior colleagues form and storm and demonstrating their value is exhilarating. Here are a couple of thoughts for you to ponder as you step into or beef up your mentorship outreach:
Expand your reach – Mentoring a junior healthcare administrator or university student is almost an expectation, but also remember that you can influence middle/high school students as well.
Tap into other industries – Mentoring a young professional from another industry will expand your knowledge! You get a bit of insight into their world and have lovely synergistic moments.
Reward yourself – While we don’t mentor for the rewards, we all know you can earn credits with ACHE towards volunteerism. That’s the tangible, so don’t be ashamed to get the credit but know that the pride of supporting someone is also important.
Recently, I had the pleasure to travel to Reno Nevada to watch one of my mentees check-off one of her goals, performing on the TedX stage and, of course, she nailed it! She doesn’t work in healthcare, our paths crossed through other work and I look forward to our calls. We enjoy time together talking about the differences in our work, suggestions to manage the difficult moments, family/work intersection and the goals that we have for ourselves. Yes, I said the goals WE have for ourselves. I didn’t include this one on the above list but you should always feel comfortable about sharing YOUR goals, get their perspective. A CEO/SVP etc. can learn from junior colleagues and students just as much.
Humility, giving and gratitude will always be cornerstone pillars of our success. Mentorship plays nicely with all. Be well.
