Thank you all for joining us for the Rose Bar DEI Event with ACHE’s Western Florida Chapter! Check out the video below with highlights from the night!
Dr. Lesley Clack is an Associate Professor and Department Chair of Health Sciences at Florida Gulf Coast University and is an ACHE WFC Board Member. Throughout her academic career, she has focused on the development and direction of health administration programs and teaching and mentoring students to obtain management and leadership positions in healthcare systems – a core pillar of ACHE.
One of the ways Dr. Clack has been able to engage with students in healthcare management and leadership is through studying abroad! Dr. Clack recently launched the Comparative Healthcare Systems in Europe study abroad program at FGCU, where she and 17 students saw first-hand what other healthcare systems were like in Switzerland and Italy.
Through valuable experiences like these, Dr. Clack can offer mentorship, guidance, and insight into the complex world of healthcare beyond our backyard. Mentorship and learning opportunities like these are crucial elements to cultivating the next generation of healthcare leaders, which Dr. Clack embraces with both FGCU and ACHE Western Florida Chapter. Thank You!
Like most of you, I make time to mentor. It is often hard to squeeze in. The calendar is ugly, the projects many. However, each and every time, whether it is a long-term relationship or a one-off request for a career huddle, I am always enriched by the time I spend with each person. Is it easy to make time, no, but the reward is great. Watching junior colleagues form and storm and demonstrating their value is exhilarating. Here are a couple of thoughts for you to ponder as you step into or beef up your mentorship outreach:
Recently, I had the pleasure to travel to Reno Nevada to watch one of my mentees check-off one of her goals, performing on the TedX stage and, of course, she nailed it! She doesn’t work in healthcare, our paths crossed through other work and I look forward to our calls. We enjoy time together talking about the differences in our work, suggestions to manage the difficult moments, family/work intersection and the goals that we have for ourselves. Yes, I said the goals WE have for ourselves. I didn’t include this one on the above list but you should always feel comfortable about sharing YOUR goals, get their perspective. A CEO/SVP etc. can learn from junior colleagues and students just as much.
Humility, giving and gratitude will always be cornerstone pillars of our success. Mentorship plays nicely with all. Be well.

Students and Host Sites: Register for the 2022 Summer Enrichment Program
We would like to let you know you can register for the American Hospital Association’s Institute for Diversity and Health Equity’s 2022 Summer Enrichment Program. The Summer Enrichment Program grows and strengthens the pipeline of healthcare leaders from underrepresented groups, and places diverse graduate students pursuing advanced degrees in healthcare administration or a related field in 10-week, paid internships across the country. The Institute’s staff is working with organizations to match SEP students with host sites starting in February. Internships generally take place from June through August.
ACHE and the Institute are co-promoting the SEP to increase the number of students who participate in the program each year and, accordingly, increase the number of host sites. Just as students benefit from experiential learning, healthcare organizations that register to become host sites gain access to the healthcare leaders of tomorrow—former SEP interns are now CEOs and administrators of hospitals and healthcare organizations nationwide.
Help strengthen equity and inclusion in healthcare organizations—learn more and register today.
